Shall we bake? It's been sometime since we baked right? Here is something simple to put together, if you are in a hurry. I was searching for a simple eggless chocolate cake and google took me here. This cake is really moist and I fell in love with its colour :) I think, this will be my go to recipe for an eggless chocolate cake. What I liked most about it is, it isnt very sweet, even with the frosting. Just the right amount of sweetness for me.
I wanted this cake to have a very homely look, because I was baking it for a friend… who is crazy about homemade baked goodies. So what do you think, does it look like a simple homemade chocolatey goodness to you?
You ready with your whisk, measuring cups, flour and apron… shall we roll?

Too many delicious and mouth watering reciepe. Loved your blog.
Thanks a lot for your lovely feedback :)
really i appreciate, you made and guide properly regarding cake recipe now i want to try this recipe pictures also looking very awesome
Hope you get to try it soon :)
I tried this recipe. But the upper side of the cake turned out hard and the bottom middle part was uncooked.
Can you please suggest where am I going wrong?
Hi,
From your comment, I guess either the oven temp was too high or the baking tin you used was small. If the temp is high, the top gets to cooked faster and leaving the inside uncooked. That’s the case with using smaller size tin as well. Hope this helps.
Cheers
Maria
Hi Maria,
As you suggested my baking tin was small. I bought a new one and tried this recipe. And it turned out just delicious!!
Thanks!

Hi Maria,
I baked this cake today, by following the exact ingredients. But unfortunately, it was very bitter for me. Isn’t 6 tbspn cocoa powder too much?
Can I do with out baking soda?can I use curd for yoghurt?
So simple to make, and super moist! Definitely keeping this recipe as my go to for a quick and easy chocolate cake. Whipped this up when I had unexpected guest went down a treat! Thank you for sharing!
Hi Trish,
Thank you very much for your wonderful feedback :) I agree with you, this recipe is a keeper. Good to hear that your guest also enjoyed this cake.

Maria
Hi.. I tried this cake.. Taste was wonderful.. but it did not came out in whole.. it was crumbled.. can you tell me what might have gone wrong?
Thanks Madhura :) I guess the cake crumbles if the batter isn’t mixed well or if the oven was too hot. Hope it comes out perfect next time. All the best
Hi Maria, can I double the recipe to make a thicker cake? If yes, how long will I have to bake it in a 9inch round pan? May I know what is the reason for having hot coffee? What effect will it have on the cake if I used room temp coffee instead?
Sorry for the long list of questions!!
Hi Jesse,
I guess, you can do that and it may take around 45 mins to bake. About the hot coffee, honestly I dont know the reason :) I just followed the recipe…

Maria
Hi Maria,
Hi I would like to know that if I could replace sunflower oil with canola oil. Today I can bake the cake for my husband..
Hi Sumi,
yes, you can do that.
I want to make double of this cake.Should I increase the measurement of baking powder and baking soda also?
Hi Shreya,
I’ve never tried doubling it, usually when I want a bigger qty, I make it as two batches :) However, my guess is you can use 1.5 tsp baking soad and 1 tsp baking powder for double the qty.
Cheers
Maria
Hi Maria
Thank you so much for the wonderful recipe. My cake turned out so yum. I baked it on New Year. And I used curd for the recipe i read someone asked u about replacing yogurt with curd so mine was a superb result.
Hi Neha,
You are welcome :) Really happy to know that the cake came out well for you.
Wish you a Happy New Year!

Hello! I was looking for an eggless cake recipe for my egg-allergic cousins, and this looks perfect! I was just wondering… is 6 tbs of cocoa enough to make it really chocolatey? Sorry for the doubt, but the recipes I usually use have a lot more cocoa…
Hi Hadiya,
Thank you! I’ve used the mentioned qty of cocoa for this recipe and with the chocolate icing, it worked out pretty well. Hope you get to try this and your cousins like it.
Happy baking!
Cheers
Maria
Hii maria, this recipe is so different than other eggless recipes on the Internet. I’ll surely try it soon. But I just wanted to know what if I use salted butter instead of unsalted butter in the icing? Reply soon, thanks :)
Hi Tanvii,
Thanks! Btw, I’m sorry for the delayed reply. Got a bit busy during the holidays. You just need to increase the qty of icing sugar, if you are using salted butter for icing. I do hope you get to try this cake soon and like it too.
Wish you a Happy New Year!

I have a bar cavity pan – how long should I bake these for if I am using this pan? And to what level should I fill the cavity? Do let me know :-)
Bar pan ref: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008KE7L2S/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Hi Pavithra,
Sorry for the delayed reply. From the pic, that you’ve shared, I guess you can treat it as cupcakes, so may be fill up-to two thirds of each bar and may be you can bake for 15-17 mins. Hope you get to try this and like it as well.
Wish you a Happy New Year!
Cheers
Maria
Thanks a ton maria…cakecame out superb…. My daughter who never eats cream cake ,wants me to bake this again…
Hi Deeksha,
You are welcome :)
Really happy to know that your daughter enjoyed this cake. Thank you so much for taking time to leave a comment here.

Maria
Hi Maria,
Thank you for the recipe turned out really well. I also tried making it 4X times this recipe, that time the centre sunk. I would like to know if it is alright to do 4X times the baking powder and baking soda? thanks again
Hi Rubina,
You are welcome :) I guess 4 times of raising agents is a bit too much. Whenever I want to make a large qty, I make it in double batches. May be you can try it that way and see..
Cheers
Maria
Thank you for your reply Maria!!
But I want to bake a 12″ dia and 2″ height cake, so I tried 4x times…. is there a way I can reduce the raising agents? Any help in this area, I would be thankful. TIA.
Regards
Rubina
Hi Rubina,
I havent tried baking such a big cake, so I’m not sure. May be you can double the qty of raising agents, instead of increasing it 4 times. Since I havent tried it, it’s just a guesswork from my side.
Hope it works out.. all the best!

can we use curd instead of yogurt?
Yes, you can..
Hi
Maria,
Recently I started baking and got the below recipe online.
http://food.ndtv.com/recipe-moist-eggless-chocolate-cake-427676
Then I came to know about this blog from one of my friends. I
just have few doubts:
I tried to bake the cake in 4 portions as my tin was small.
The first time cake came out very well but it was tasted salty
rather than being sweet.
So I added more of sugar powdered and mix it well. But then the
cake didn’t bake properly. It used to come up and then it was sinking from the
middle.
Can you please suggest why was it sinking from the center and
why it tasted salty?
Hi Shradha,
I guess the batter was salty, may be because it wasn’t mixed well and so the salt wasn’t equally distributed.
Pls check out the below link to know why cake sinks in the middle:
http://www.nigella.com/kitchen-queries/view/Why-Do-My-Cakes-Sink-In-The-Middle?/3430
I’ve posted an eggless choc cake recipe on the site, have a look at it
https://mariasmenu.wpcomstaging.com/desserts/eggless-chocolate-cake
Cheers
Maria
Hi Maria,
Thanks for the suggestions.
I am planning to make the cake present on this site.
But I wanna make a smaller cake instead. Can you please suggest What measures should I take and should be the baking time reduced accordingly or I can just half the ingredients accordingly ?
Hi Shradha,
Try baking half the measurements given on the site. I think it will take around 20-25 mins for baking.
All the best!
Cheers
Maria
Can you please tell how much a cup equals in grams??
Hi Nileena,
Pls check the below page:
http://allrecipes.com/howto/cup-to-gram-conversions/
It is a very yummy recipe. My daughter and husband just loved it. Thanks and keep sharing such wonderful recipes that make my family so happy.
Thank you so much Rupam :) Great to know that your family liked it.

Maria
Can v use this recipe for making cupcakes? How many cupcakes will it yield?
Hi Preety,
Yes you can make cupcakes with this recipe. My guess is you will get around 10-12 std size cupcakes from the above qty.
Cheers
Maria
Thanks Maria. I had a query, generally when I try making cupcakes I get a hard crust on top. What goes wrong? What should be the baking temperature n time?
Hi Preety,
I think, it can be because the temp is too high or it’s baked longer than it’s required.
I bake most of my cakes and cupcakes at 175-180 C. Cupcakes are usually ready in 15 mins. However the temp n time can vary for diff ovens.
Hope you get to try this one and it comes out perfect!
Happy baking :)
Cheers
Maria
Hi maria, I ttied this recipe andit became a super duper hit!!! For the first time my husband told me excellent the momentbhe tasted the cake!!I made in pressure cooker since I dint have the oven and still it came out yum yum !!
Hi Kavitha,
Thank you so much :) So happy to know that the cake turned out well for you.
Cheers
Maria
Hi Maria. This recipe is almost identical to the one I use but I have the same problem every time – when I add the wet ingredients into the dry, the batter curdles. Even if I add more liquid, it remains at a very thick/stringy consistency and the cake doesn’t come out very well. I’ve tried adding the liquid one at a time – oil, yogurt and then milk – and find that when I add the yogurt is when it curdles and then there’s just no bringing it back. All my ingredients are at room temperature. Any idea why this happens? Thanks!
Hi,
Did you try out this recipe? For most of the cake recipes that I try, the batter tends to curdle, but the cake comes out well. It’s because of the proportion of the wet to dry that batter tends to curdle, but it should be ok in the end.
Cheers
Maria
Yes, I have tried it. It curdles and the cake tastes a bit odd once done.
Hi,
I’m sorry to hear the cake didnt turn out well. As I’ve told you earlier, sometimes when I bake also the cake batter curdles, but it comes out well in the end.
I’m not sure what happened. Hope t comes out well next time..
Cheers
Maria
if the batter curdle you try adding a little flour to batter and then beat it
Thanks for sharing the tip here Lavina :)
May be u r over mix butter, and make sure butter is on room temperature.
Hello Maria…. I have tried the above recipe of yours, and it turned out amazingly good :)
Thank you for sharing :)
Hi Durga,
You are welcome :) Great to know that you liked the cake. Thanks for leaving a comment and also for sharing a pic, the cake looks great!

Hi Maria..The oven temperature you mentioned here..is it for the basic oven or convection one?? If its for a basic oven how long should I keep it in
And one more question..can I use Wheat flour instead of maida
TIA:)
Hi Krishna,
The temperature mentioned is for the basic oven. I’ve never tried this with wheat flour, so I’m not sure how it works. May be you can try it out and see :)
I guess the texture of the cake will be a bit dense if you use whole wheat.

Hi Maria .I got a vegan recipe off the net before I landed on this site . I used almond milk with lemon juice to curdle it ,in place of regular milk. But otherwise the other ingredients were the same.Baked twice .The cake tends to smell like vinegary :-(Stink is too strong and I am not able to tell what is causing it! Still a novice at baking. You are an experienced baker. Could you tell what might have went wrong?
Next time I sure shall try your recipe out.
Hi Nayak,
I havent used almond milk in any cooking, so I’m not familiar with it. Also I dont know whether the combination of almond milk and vinegar brings out a strong smell.
I’m sorry I’m not of much help to you.
Hope you get to try this recipe sometime and it comes out well.
Cheers
Maria
Iam using milkmaid instead of sugar as my cake dosnt bake well wid it. Kindly tell me how to get this cake darker as with milkmaid cake gets light on colour shall i use more cofee or will it make bitter..if yes then in what quantity
I tried ur cake it came awsum.just that sugar didnt mixed well and it was not baked full..tell me if i use milkmaid it becomes lighter in colour should i use coffee more or it will turn bitter. If yes..then in how much quantity..?? As i love that brown colour of cake..
Hi Shivani,
Thanks..
I havent tried it with milkmaid, so I’m not sure. However I think by using milkmaid the colour of the cake will be affected very much.
If you feel that sugar is not getting mixed well, try crushing it a bit and then follow the rest of the recipe.
Cheers
Maria
Hi Priya,

Hi Maria, Thankyou so much for this recipe… I used this and baked a cake today. It turned out awesome… My question to you is that in case i need a bigger cake then should I just double the proportions? I am generally used to baking cakes with egg…
Hi Sujata,
You are welcome :)
Yes, you can double the qties for a bigger cake.

Maria
Hi Maria. I took the coffee out cause I feed this to my kids. Do I have to substitute that with just hot water? Thank you
Hi Elaine,
Sorry for the delayed reply. Yeah I guess you can just add the 1/4 cup hot water.
Hope you get to try this and like it too.
Cheers
Maria
Thanks a lot for this recipe. The cake was moist and soft. I made this cake yesterday and it was a hit. I generally don’t like icing on my cake. Instead what I did, was to sprinkle a generous amount of icing sugar on it. And it tasted so yummy! Thanks Again!!!
Hi Paushali,
You are welcome :)
Nice to know that this recipe came out well for you. Thanks for sharing your feedback here.
Cheers
Maria
I should also mention, that I had a request for red velvet. Since I doubled the recipe I dissolved 2 tsp of instant coffee with ¼ cup of water, and mixed a ¼ cup of of vegan food colouring with the coffee.
Hi Lisa,
That’s a good tip for those who are looking for an eggless red velvet cake recipe :) Thank you!

Hi Maria, I did double the recipe. I used a 10″ metal spring form pan, and I baked at 350 Celcius for an hour. I kept checking for doneness, every 10 minutes after the first ½ hour. Beautiful cake, with beautiful results.
Hi Lisa,
Great to know that the cake came out well for you. Thanks for letting me know about it :)
Cheers
Maria
Thank you for this recipe. Can this recipe be doubled, and bake for an hour?
Hi Lisa,
You are welcome! Yes, you can double the recipe, but i dont think you’ve to bake it for 1 hour.

Dear maria ..cake became a success the second time…the mistake I did earlier was tat i didn’t use glassware in microwave…????????adding a pic here..
Hi Shruthi,
I’m so happy to know that it worked out well for you :) Thanks for leeting me know about it.
The cake looks good! Thanks for sharing the pic :)
okay am totally a bad cook when it comes to baking :( :( intitally the centre got hard while the sides were perfect..now made another batter and tried..now centre is soft while the sides are still under cooked :( :( maria please come to rescue..can i cook the same batter using steamer??if so could you please instruct me…totally sad at my first cake venture :(:(
Hi Shruthi,
Sorry to hear that it didnt come out well, but dont worry, you will get it right soon :)
I havent tried steaming it, but I guess you can do it. Next time when you try in the oven, wrap a wet tea towel around the cake tin and bake (if it’s an electric oven). It will help uniform baking.
Hope your next attempt comes out perfect! Happy baking :)
Cheers
Maria
can sweetened cocoa be used??the cocoa from cadbury brand?
Hi Shruthi,
I’ve never used sweetened cocoa for baking, so I’m not sure. However if you are using, you may need to adjust the qty of sugar. Cadbury has unsweetened cocoa powder, that’s good for baking.
Cheers
Maria
I guess it has to be unsweetened one..written as 99.9% cocoa solid..so the cadbury one am having should be unsweetened ..:) wish me luck ..gonna try your cake today :):)
hi,
nice recipe. but i want to ask that don’t we have to powder the sugar?
& is there any problem if i double all the ingredients & make a cake serving 14?

Hi Maria,
I made this cake for my husband’s birthday last week. I’m a total newbie to cooking and had never even dreamt of baking! My husband’s birthday fell around a time when we could not have non-veg, hence I turned to an eggless cake. And where else would I go for an easy yummy recipe but your blog.
The cake turned out to be fantastic.I couldn’t believe my first baking experiment could turn so great. My husband was impressed too and there couldn’t have been a better b’day surprise !! All thanks to you and your wonderful recipe .
Since this was my first attempt the icing is kinda shabby though :)
Thanks for sharing the pic dear, it looks really good for a first timer :)

hey maria:) :) i love the look of the cake and the simplicity of the recipe.. :) :) plan on making this for my mum’s bday, who doesnt like eggs.. i enjoy baking.. just started recently.. can i bake this without baking soda? also i prefer a hand whisk so how do i know if it is beaten enough?
Thank you :)
I’m not sure about leaving the baking soda part though.. You can use a whisk to make this, just whisk it till all the ingredients are well combined and you cannot see any traces of the flour..
Hope your mom enjoys her b’day cake. Advanced b’day wishes to her.
All the best and happy baking :)

Hi Maria
I have tried the above eggless chocolate cake using paper cups. When i started to bake the cupcakes 15 min later the cake mixture started to overflow. I open the oven door to check when insert the tester into the mixture, it went hollow.
Pls advice me.
HI VD,
I guess the paper cups were overfilled with the cake batter. While filling the cucpake liners, only fill upto two thirds, otherwise it wont come out well.
I do hope it comes out perfect next time. All the best and happy baking :)

Hi Rubina,

About the crumbly part, I’m not quite sure why it happened like that :((

Hi Maria,
The cake looks divine and i’d love to try it but just wanted to know if i can skip the coffee bit from the recipe?? Or is there a substitute for it?? Is the purpose of coffee used in the recipe for enhancing the taste and color? Or does it have anything to do with the rising of the cake while baking?
Thanx
Hi Priya,
Thank you! The coffee is used for mainly flavour and colour. You can omit it if you like. Just add 1/4 cup of plain hot water and follow the recipe.
Hope the cake comes out well :)

Dear maria
I went through all the comments on this recipe everybody has appreciated this but I am feeling so weird asking you this silly question as wat to do if the base of the cake has not baked properly I am using onida barbecue model with bake option I preheated the oven as per your instructions but failed miserably.
Can you please help me maria
Dear Sajna,
Sorry to hear that your cake didnt come out well :(
From your comment, I guess it has got something to do with your oven settings. I usually out the top and bottom baking option for all my bakes.
I’m sorry I cant figure out any other reason for the bottom part not getting baked :(

Dear maria
Please help I tried the eggless cake but some how the base of the cake never cooked.
I tried twice but the same issue happened.
Please suggest me what to do.

Hi Sajna
Sometimes the base does not get baked properly if the pan is not wide enough. Happened with me a few times when I was using a 6 inch deep pan for baking.
Thanks Meera for taking time to answer the query :)

Hi Maria,
My oven stopped working 2 days ago and as I was browsing through your recipes, this one made me crave for it. It looks really great…and must taste great too. But is there any way to bake it in a pressure cooker?
Hi Nivalia,
I havent baked in a pressure cooker yet. However I’ve posted a steamed cake recipe. May be you can follow the same method.
Please check out the steamed honey sponge cake recipe on the site.

hi Maria,
This looks great, i tried vanilla cake last week and the cake, after taking out of the oven the center sinked. Can you help me with these questions –
1) at what temperature should i bake the cake? same 180C in which i preheated the OTG?
2) My OTG has 2 options – Bake and Convection bake. Which one should I select?
3) I incorporated dry and wet ingredients using wisk, should i beat the mixture with electric blender after this?
Thanks,
Vibhuti
Hi Vibhuti,
Thank you!
You should bake the cake at 180 C itself. I’m not very familiar with the working of OTG. If you’ve manual, may be you can check it up to see which mode is used for baking cakes.
No need to use electric blender, you can use whisk itself.
Cheers

We made this cake in an easter basket mould and decorated it. First we grated some chocolate, then I mixed strawberry and yogurt. My dad mixed some banana and yogurt and I squashed some strawberries .My mum cooked some vanilla custard, and we decorated the cake. :D

Hi Maria, I’ve tried this cake many times, but in microwave mode, for 7 minutes, but it has turned out wonderful…
Today I tried it as you instructed, in convection mode. I doubled the quantity in a tin cake, and it took 61 minutes for the knife to come out clean. Is that normal? Also, I prepared a batch of batter, and realizing it would be insufficient, hurried to make another one, then poured them one over the other in the cake tin and baked according to the instructions. Is that okay? Or should I double the quantity in one go itself?
I haven’t been able to taste it since the batch has just come out of the oven as I write this and it is supposed to be a gift for a friend.
Also, does essence really make a difference to the taste? I experimented with pineapple essence too but it didn’t seem to taste any different. Can I increase the quantity???
Thanks for posting the recipe… This is the only recipe where my chocolate cake has come out pleasant to the taste buds… Our family loves this cake… Thanks again!!!
Hi Maria, I’ve tried your cake many times, with the only variation being I microwave it for 7 minutes and it turns out excellent.
Today I tried baking it in convection mode, that too doubling the quantity specified in a single batch as a cake. In that case, shouldn’t the baking time remain the same ideally? I baked it today but it took 61 minutes for the knife to come out clean. I am yet to taste it since it is just out of the oven as I write this. Also, I prepared one batch first, poured it, and realizing it was insufficient, made another one quickly and poured it over the first before baking it. Does that cause any difficulties? (I used a tin cake mould, square).
Also, what other essence tastes good in place of vanilla? Sometimes I feel the taste of essence is not discernible, and even pineapple essence I tried once had no discernible flavor. Should I be putting more quantity of it?
I hope the cake turns out well today. I have always loved this particular cake of yours, although I cooked it in a microwave… Thank you..
Hi,
I havent tried baking in MW, so I’m not familiar with its working. I think the baking time will definitely be more than 7 mins in a convection mode. But I’m not sure why it took 61 mins.. The reason can be, the size of the tin you used may be small compared to the batter qty.
I dont think pouring one more batter over the top should affect the cake, but since I’m no professional baker, I’m not very sure about it too..
Try using a different brand of vanilla essence or as you said, you can increase the qty of the one you are using. You can try vanilla beans instead of essence, it gives a stronger flavour.
Cheers

Yep, you can pour ganache over the iced cake. But make sure the icing is set before pouring the ganache. Check out the moist chocolate cake with butter cream and ganache recipe on the site for the details.

I tried the cake and absolutely loved it . I wanted to turn this into cupcakes. Can you tell me the baking time and also can I use whipped cream in the icing to turn it into cupcake frosting .. Also I has forgotten to add water in the icon an still it was
yum and creamy
Hi Priyanka,
Thanks a lot :) I think the baking time will be approx 15-18 mins, depending on the size of your cupcakes. Yes you can add whipping cream. I think you can fold in the whipped cream to the icing and use.

Hello Maria..just want to know what does it mean by “preheat the oven at 180 C”. I am using IFB Microwave Oven in which autocook menu shows approximate time of 2-3 minutes for 200gm plum cake. Is it necessary to preheat the oven??
Hi Deepti,
First of all, so sorry for the delayed reply. I’m on vacation now, hence the delay.
Before doing any baking, you need to preheat the oven for sometime. To know about the preheating options in MW, please refer the below post. Hope it helps…

Hi Gayathri,
First of all my apologies for the delayed reply :( I’m really sorry I missed out on your comment :(((
If you are not a big fan of sweet cakes, this should work fine without icing also. But if you want the cake to be sweeter, you can increase the sugar by 1/4 cup more.
Wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a happy and blessed new year!
Cheers

Dear Maria! I tried your eggless vanilla and chocolate cup cake recipes for my daughter’s bday-playdate and they came out awesome. I added some orange juice and essence to the chocolate cup cake batter and that gave them a nice flavor and taste too.
Hi Harini,
Belated b’day wishes to your daughter. hope she had a wonderful day!
Nice to know that the cakes came out well :)

Hi Maria..I am going to try your recipe , but whenever I tried to bake a cake , it become very less spongy…what to add in it to make it extra spongy?
Hi Deepti,
I dont usually add anything extra in the recipe to make it spongy. Make sure not to over mix the recipe and also dont bake it for a longer time.
Hope your cake comes out perfect!
Happy baking :)

Maria
Hi Maria,
My cake came out very thin in an 8″ dish. any idea why?
Subhashini, was your baking tin a wide one or a deep one? I think it will come out thin, if it’s a wide pan. May be you can use a slightly smaller tin and see :)
Cheers
Maria
Hi Maria,
I have tried your recipe and it was too delicious. Thanks for this wonderful recipe.
But I faced one problem while baking cake. Middle of the cake puff up more than the sides and in the end of baking it sinks a bit in the middle. Can you please tell me why it must have happened. I have increased the quantities to 1.5 times.
I am planning to try your fruit cake for christmas. Thanks again for your wonderful recipes.
Thanks Minu for the comment :)
From your comment, I guess it happened because you used a smaller size tin. When you use a smaller tin, it happens that the cake tends to rise in the middle for lack of space and then it sinks after a while.
Please try using a bigger pan next time. Hope it works..
Cheers

Hey Maria, this recipe is amazing and the cake tastes good… Altho inspite of greasing the tin, twice the bottom got stuck… And is it possible to use half a cup of butter instead of the oil?
The taste however is just amazing!!! Thank you so much!
Hi Payal,
Thank you! If parchment paper/baking paper is available, that’s the best option. Also, after greasing the tin, dust it with some plain flour/cocoa and tap the tin, so that it spreads uniformly in the tin.
I havent substituted butter for oil, but I think you can give it a try.
Hope it works out..
Wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Hi maria,
i tried this cake it was absolutely yummy!!!!!!!!!
my kids liked it .it was a hit in the family.i am new to baking by my luck i chanced upon ur blog a few days back and was impressed with ur cake recipies.i am dying to try them out but i am totally confused .i have a few doubts ,if u can please clarify-
$can we use vegetable oil instead of butter if yes please advise the measurement.
$H ow to convert grams into cups or ml?
$this is a silly question but i am confused .what is the difference between all purpose flour and plain flour.
Hi,
Thank you for trying this recipe. Good to know that you liked it :)
About your queries…
I think you can use oil instead of butter, but I havent tried it, so I’m not sure about the qty.
Please check out the below site for conversion:

Hey Maria!
I followed your recipe to the word, just doubled all the ingredients. I could not resist licking the batter that was smooth, glossy and had the perfect taste – it was lip-smacking and I was jumping with joy! I have tried so many different recipes for chocolate cake but yours is a clean winner. Thank you so much:)
Also, I was wondering if butter could be substituted for oil. I used sunflower oil but there was a slight oil aftertaste.
Hi Ramya,
Thanks a bunch dear! I’m glad that this recipe worked well for you :)
I havent substituted butter with oil for this cake, but for another chocolate cake, I’ve used oil. That one comes out well. But it’s not eggless. Please check out the moist chocolate cake for the same.
HI Maria tried out this recipe and it turned out to be delicious and easy to make.My question is can it be possible that this cake can be made without the chocolate icing? You see there are some senior members in my family who are ‘not’ too crazy about any kind of icing on a cake:))So if I have to make this cake omitting the icing sugar what are the possible changes that I will have to make to the basic cake recipe in terms of addition of extra sugar etc?????
Thanks Gayathri :) I think you can make it without icing too. You can use 1 cup of sugar instead of 3/4 cup to make the cake. Hope it works and your family enjoys it.
Cheers
Maria
Hi Maria,
I need a small variation. Please give me the proportion of b. soda and b.powder to be used in a eggless yellow cake (not a chocolate cake), as i am unable to make it. B.soda works well with chocolate mostly.
I sent a mail to you re this.
Waiting for your reply.
Thanks a lot.

hi maria, i tried this cake using all the same ingredients, but my cake turned out very crumbly, i did a soaking of the sponge with milk and icing sugar also. Is it becoz of that ?? icing colour was not like urs , but tasted good.. can u please tell me how to rectify this problem..i bake often.
thanks,
neiha
Hi Neiha,
Sorry, I didnt understand the soaking of the sponge part you did. I havent mentioned anything of that sort in the recipe.
The cake can crumble if it is cut before it’s cooled down completely or if the batter is over mixed.
I do hope it comes out well next time..

hi Maria,
Am a ‘silent admirer’ of ur site….just made this cake yday..4 my hubby’s b’day…yummy it was…
First time trying an eggless cake…just the icing part i changed,i did blackforest icing with whipped cream, cherries and chocolate shavings…
great going Maria
Thank you Sherin! I’m glad that you liked it. Black forest icing sounds great! May be I can also try it next time :)

Maria
Hi Maria,
Will be it okay if i omit the bicarb.
Thanks
JIni
 Hi Jini,
I dont think so, it’s better to add it, especially for chocolate cakes. It reacts with the cocoa powder and gives a very nice dark colour too…
hi maria thanks for ur quick reply…i turned on both the heaters and ….i had a superb cake….thans a lot….and plz if u can do some donutss…..
also i would like to ask in one of my recipes for buns i used instant yeast but it didnt buble….wat could be the reasons for the dough not to rise….more over my yeast didnt bubble even after puttin it in warm milk with some sugar……thanks
Hi Nisha,
Great to know that the cake turned out well, I’m happy :)
I think if you use instant yeast, you dont have to keep it for rising, you can just add it directly to the flour. Also if the yeast is not fresh, it wont rise…
Cheers
Maria
hi maria i did exactly as per ur instructions…but my cake did cook after 30 mins on top…..i hav an electric oven not the cookin range…i only kept the bottom heater on…….should i keeep the top heater also on?????thanks
Hi Nisha,
You mean the top portion didnt cook? I usually keep both the top n bottom heater on for baking cakes. Try that next time and I do hope it comes out well.

When I started cooking, after marriage, I chose all simple recipes from here, my husband loved them.
Suddenly I wanted to try baking, and, baked my first ever cake. I couldn’t even wait for it to cool down. It was yummy. And such a good feeling to watch the plate go empty in an hour. The chocolatey heavenly sponginess, and that mild coffee hit of that oh-so-wonderful cake, I was floored. Thank you so much for this :)
Hi Fari,
You are welcome dear! Really happy to know that you are a regular visitor here, thanks a bunch :)

Dear Maria, I do not have an oven but a microwave. Please advice about the temperature as last time i tried baking a cake but I ended up spoiling it because of wrong temp. Kindly advise.
Dear Pooja,
I use an electric oven for my baking, so I’m not familiar with MW baking.
However I’ve read somewhere that if you are using a MW with convection, it works just like the electric oven, so you can follow the same temp.
Hope this cake comes out well for you…
Cheers
Maria
Maria, Sorry to say this but the cake does not look homemade, it looks really professional :):). Nothing I bake at home ever looks so good or neat..I know it is not what you were aiming for, but I guess sometimes you cannot help perfection. The cake looks absolutely delicious and tempting. The combination of dark and light brown is so irresistable. I am going to bake it this weekend. I want to make it double layered, hopefully it will be tall enough to be sliced into two.
Hi Poornima,
When I started reading your comment, I was like “OMG, the cake didnt bake well for her” but the second part made me smile :)
Thanks dear for your lovely comment but I should say I’m far from perfect when it comes to icing the cake n all. Btw, did you get to try this over the weekend? I do hope it came out well for you…
Cheers
Maria
Hi Maria,
Thank you for the reply:). I baked this today as I could not bake it over the weekend. And oh my god, it was so good….can you believe that we already finished the entire cake (it is 9 PM where i live and I baked it at around 12 in the noon). It was smooth, moist and unbelievably chocolaty…god, i can still smell it :D
I did not even ice it as I ran out of time and yet it was so good. I can only imagine how good it will be with icing….though my husband does not like iced cakes much and told me he prefers it this way :)
Thank you so much for the fantastic recipe…this is going to be my go-to recipe for chocolate cake from now on. And this is the third recipe of urs with which I have had success. Your malai kofta is almost a weekly feature in our house now :). Thank you once again and keep up the awesome work.
Poornima
Thanks a bunch dear! I’m really happy that the cake came out well for you. Yeah it’s good even without icing, but try it with icing sometime, when you are in a mood to indulge ;)
Thanks again dear for trying the recipes from here and also for the comments.

hi…a couple of doubts…..is parchment paper the same as baking paper?and r either of these the same as greaseproof paper…where do u buy parchment paper here in bahrain?which brand?…some of the recipes u have said grease the dish and place parchment paper…some places grease the parchment paper….is tht significant?r those cupcake liners we get similar to any of the above mentioned papers??do they need greasing too?sorry to sound like a dunce….
Hi Rashmi,
Is parchment same as baking paper… to be honest, I’m not sure. Here in Bahrain, you see parchment paper in shops. But back home, it’s known as baking paper, so…
I buy Dana brand parchment paper, most of the time. I buy it from Megamart/Geant/Lulu etc;
I usually dont grease the parchment paper. However in some cases, depending on the recipe, the cake seems to stick to the parchment, especially sponge cake. So in that case, I grease the parchment paper also. So I write it depending on the recipe.
I think the cupcake liners are similar to the parchment paper. I dont grease the cupcake liners.
Hope it’s clear now..
Cheers
