Homemade Pizza Sauce

Print Pin
Course: Dip, Side
Cuisine: Italian
Author: Maria Jose Martin

  • 2 medium Tomatoes
  • 1/4 - 1/2 cup Ready made tomato puree / paste
  • 1.5 - 2 tsp Grated / crushed garlic
  • 1 tsp Dried oregano
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • 1/2 tsp Vinegar
  • 1/2 - 1 tsp Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper powder
  • Salt
  • Oil ( I used Olive oil)

  • Blanch the tomatoes (put them in boiling water for around 10 mins and peel the skin). Chop the blanched tomatoes and grind to a smooth paste.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add crushed/grated garlic. Stir it till it turns golden brown in colour. Add the rest of the ingredients to it. Mix well and let it boil. Lower heat and simmer for 10 mins, stirring continuously, until it is reduced in qty and thick enough to spread without being runny.
  • Discard the bay leaf. Let it cool completely and store in an airtight container. This yields around 3/4 -1 cup of pizza sauce.

You can store it in the fridge for 2-3 weeks. You can also finely chop the blanched tomato, instead of grinding it. I used 1/2 cup of ready made tomato paste for the above qty.

  1. Hi Maria
I stumbled upon your blog while searching for the eraichi pathiri recipe that our Malayali neighbours usually send us over for Iftar.
I tried the pizza sauce recipe and loved it! I absolutely agree with you on the fact that i end up throwing the store bought sauce after a single use.
Apart from your recipes, I also enjoy the witty, insightful & very jovial intro that you give before each recipe. What you share is from the heart, no doubt!
    Kudos to you!

PS: The eraichi pathiri was a hit! Made it twice!

    BTB.. i have a query..
for this pizza sause , u said to use 2 tomatoes ,rit?
so along with that we should add readymade tomato paste or its just an option….
    plzz…. help……

    • Hi Dhanya,

First of all Congrats dear! Wish you both a happy and blessed married life!

It’s a pleasure to know that you find this space helpful, thank you so much dear.

About the pizza sauce, along with tomatoes, you need to add readymade tomato puree, it’s not optional. It’s absically a tomato based sauce, hence that much qty of tomato in the recipe.

      Hope it’s clear now..
