Beef & Kaya (Raw Banana) Ularthiyathu

  • 1/2 kg Beef (cut into bite size pieces)

For Marination:

  • 1.5 tsp Kashmiri chilly powder
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper powder
  • 2 tsp Coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp Garam masala
  • 1 tbsp Ginger & garlic (crushed)
  • 2 tsp Vinegar (refer notes)
  • Salt
  • Curry leaves
  • 2 medium - big Kaya (raw banana) (cubed)

For Masala

  • 1/2 - 3/4 cup Small onion / Pearl onion ( sliced finely)
  • 1 tbsp Crushed Ginger & garlic (each)
  • 1.5 tsp Kashmiri chilly powder
  • 2 tsp Coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp Garam Masala
  • 1/2 tsp Meat Masala (optional)
  • 3/4 cup Water
  • 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
  • Curry leaves
  • Coconut oil


  • Clean the beef and cut into bite size pieces. Marinate it with Kashmiri chilly powder, pepper powder, coriander powder, garam masala, crushed ginger and garlic, vinegar, salt and curry leaves (ingredients listed under for marination). Keep aside for 10 mins or so.
  • Add 3/4 cup water to the marinated beef and cook till its done. Drain the cooked pieces and keep aside the stock.
  • Cut the raw banana in cubes and cook it with salt & water, till its done. Drain the water and keep aside the cooked raw banana.
  • Heat oil in a pan & splutter the mustard seeds. Add finely sliced small onion, crushed ginger & garlic & curry leaves. Cook for a few minutes. Add the masala powders and fry till the oil starts appearing, a minute or two. Add the cooked beef & banana to this. Mix well. Add the stock of the beef and again mix well. Do a salt test, and add more if necessary. Cover & cook till the beef pieces & banana cubes are coated well with the gravy. Remove from fire.


Vinegar acts as a meat tenderizer and you can omit it if you wish. The curry tastes better the next day or keep at least a few hours before serving. If the curry tends to dry, add a little bit of water while heating it.

    Just happened to stumble across your blog while wondering what to do with raw papayas. Great Mallu cooking that is reminiscent of my years in Kerala! reg this post I was wondering if its ok to add beef and kaya together cos beef generally is cooked in pressure cooker and would take a long while on the stove without pressure, right? Won’t the kaya get overcooked by then??

      Thanks for visiting this blog! About cooking beef and kaya together…. I’ve cooked both separately in this recipe and combined them both in the final stage of cooking. As you’ve said if we cook both together, kaya will get overcooked.

    for this this i have an alternative, will be more tasty if we use kurka(chinese potato) instead of kaya..I really love it..
    try it, i am sure you will love it….you can get packed kurka in indian stores(for NRIs)

  5. Hey maria.. long time … but i have been visiting your site once in a while ..everytime when i have a doubt i do refer your site and rely on your recipes than any other’s coz i know you put them only after trying it on your own.. i really appreciate that..
    sometimes i try some recipe books and later the dish i made would look entirely different from the picture they have given in the book and have felt cheated.. your recipes are not like that.. they are so homely..!!
    okay, i will come back to the actual purpose for writing in today.. i was looking for some beef keema recipes.. do you have any with you?.. (remember the keema stuffed roti’s and dosa’s) my major doubt is that do we have to cook the keema separately before sauting them. i bought raw minced meat. (at home they cook the beef and then mince it ) this is already minced, so, does this one get cooked with the ingrediants in a kadai. would that time of preparation be good enough to consume the red meat..?

    Wow great recipe….my mouth is watering because both banana and beef are my favourites….

    As usual I am on my week end recipe search… Do not get raw banana here but will try this combo with Chena and let you know the results :-)

    Do you get Koorka there…..Beef & Koorka is another great Combo :-)

      Chena is one of my all time fav veggies, but since my husband doesnt like it, I dont make it at home. The thought of chena & beef together makes my mouth water :)


  7. I totally agree with you about beef fry…it is my favourite too & with thenga kotthu…it is heavenly. Around our parts, beef is also teamed up with koorka. Your idea for an everyday kind of cookbook is fantastic. As a new bride, I was gifted one by my friend & it was the most useful gift I ever had.

  9. Wow that sounds great !! am looking forward to the everyday recipes.. I work almost 11 hours everyday and still somehow manage to make 3 meals a day.. It can be really tiring !!!..
    My hus eats only veg during the week so everything needs to be made fresh on the same day, no freezing :)
    It would be great if there were recipes with a cooking/preparation time of half n hour :)..

    I normally don’t cook beef, but TH was asking me to make beef fry yesterday. I will use your beef fry recipe to surprise him :) btw, love this plantain beef uliyarthu. It looks so inviting.
