  1. Hi Chechi,
Well, I can’t say I am new to baking, i have tried a few times with my convention oven but didn’t work out well so i had stopped trying altogether until I found this recipe.
so, please forgive me if the below question sounds foolish ;-)
If I want to increase the quantity will the baking time also increase?

    • Hi Giana,

It’s ok dear, there is nothing wrong with your question :)

Yes, for a bigger cake you need more baking time. Hope you get to try it soon and like it too.

      Cheers
      Maria

    • Hi Anu,

You are right, this is a basic yellow cake recipe. This recipe was given to me when I started cooking initially and at that time, I never thought much about the name…

      Cheers
      Maria

  2. Hi Maria, I tried this recipe and it was a success! this is the first time am baking(actually i steamed it because I dnt have an oven!) without cracking on the top! I actually halved all the ingredients except vanilla essence. But I guess I should have reduced it because I felt the vanilla essence was slightly overpowering. I also added whole spices like
1 clove, 1 small piece cinnamon and 1 cardamom. I have seen my Aunt cooking with whole spices so I like the taste of it.

    • Hi Nimmy,

The cake looks great! I shared the pic on FB page too, hope you saw it.

Thanks for sharing your feedback and also for the pic, appreciate it very much :)

Adding the spice sounds like a great idea!

      Cheers
      Maria

      • hi Maria Thanks for the email and thanks for sharing in FB too. I am a beginner in cooking thats why am trying easy recipes. I tried one chocolate cake recipe from Vanitha, the cake was good but the top was cracked open. the recipe called for 1 cup APF and half cup cocoa powder. one and a half tspn Baking Powder was added. was it correct? If u can help with this it would be great.

        • Hi Nimmy,

You steamed this cake or baked it? One of the reasons for the cake to crack is oven turning too hot. But if you steamed it, I’m not sure whether it applies here.

Another reason can be too much of raising agent like baking powder and baking soda. If it’s too much, it causes the cake to crack.

But then, I’m no baking expert and I dont know the science behind the baking :(

The above points I mentioned are some of the factors… Hope it helps dear…

          Cheers
          Maria

          • Hi Maria, I steamed the cake. I checked the website “joyofbaking” as u mentioned somewhere in your blog and they say for every 1 cup flour add 1 tsp baking powder. I added 1 and a half tsp because the recipe says so. anyways thanks for your reply

  3. Hi maria, I’m totally new to baking. I tried this cake.the batter was so yummy that I was so excited. But the cake did not cook in the middle even after 1 and half an hr.I tried increasing the temperature.but no luck.cud u tell me what cud be wrong.
    Manju.

    • Hi Manju,

Sorry to hear that the cake didnt turn out well :(

There are a number of reasons for the cake not getting cooked in the middle, primarily because it’s uneven heating.

Also if the baking pan is too small, the centre of the cake wont get cooked. Next time if you think that the top of the cake is getting browned, but the middle isnt cooked, try covering the cake tin loosely with al.foil and continue baking.

Hope it comes out well next time..

      Cheers
      Maria

  8. Hi Maria,

I,m the first time visitor here. Today I tried your five minutes cake, and substituted butter with oil, and it came out really well. It is so soft. My husband always love to eat plain cakes. And he is my best critic for all my trials. He gave me 4 out of five. :) and I lost my one mark for the egg smell and essence ( I replaced pineapple essence for vanilla). Other than that taste, texture, color everything was SUPERB. Thanks!

    Priya

    • Hi Priya,

Welcome to MariasMenu! Thanks for trying the recipe from here. Great to know that the cake turned out well. Here’s a tip for the eggy smell, for baking always use eggs which has light yellow color yolks. The darker the color of the egg yolks, the smellier it will be.

Thank you so much for the comment too :)

      Cheers
      Maria

  9. Sindhu

    cake J
Sorry missed to picture it bcos I was so excited and was in a hurry to taste it
    J will
remember to picture my next time. Thank you …keep the great
    job goingregardsSindhu

    •  Hi Sindhu,

Thank you so much dear for such a lovely comment. It’s nice to know that you visit this space often. Thanks for trying the cake recipe. I do hope next time you could take a pic, I’d love to see that.

  10. Hi Maria,

I came to ur blog by mistake today…but its a real good one. Can u please give me substitute for eggs in your baking recipes? Especially this one.

    Thanks,
    Neha

    • Hi Neha,

Welcome to MariasMenu! Glad that you came here by mistake ;)

I havent used any egg substitutes so far in baking, so I’m not very sure about it dear :( However I’ve posted 2 eggless cake recipes here, please have a look at it.

      Eggless cinnamon cake

      Eggless Pineapple upside down cake

Hope you’ll like it. Also pls do try other recipes when time permits. Hope to see you here often.

      Cheers
      Maria

  11. Dear Maria,

I am a huge fan of your blog and i refer to your blog for recipe whenever i need to make anything new.
I tried the 5 min cake and it came out not so fine :(
My cake got a little burnt on the upper part and it was not very soft as i expected.
i used the same quantity of ingredients that you had specified above.
Please let me know what could have gone wrong and which ingredient will add moisture and softness to the cake?

    Thanks
    Sunitha

    • Dear Sunitha,

Thank you :) Its great to know that you like this space.

I’m sorry about your cake…I’m not sure why it happened like that. May be for overbrowing/burning the top portion, try covering the baking tin loosely with aluminium foil. It will prevent the top portion from getting cooked fast.

About the softness of the cake, if you tend to over beat/over mix the batter the cake tends to become hard. Apart from that I dont why it happened :(

Hope it comes out well next time. Please check out the butter cake recipe, its an easy one & very moist too.

      All the best!

      Cheers
      Maria

      • Thanks a lot for your reply Maria. You are right.. my cake batter was too loose and may be thats why it turned to be hard. Aluminium foil is a good idea..
I will try out the butter cake and will let you know the outcome :)

        Regards
        Sunitha

  12. Dear maria,
I am so glad that I came across your web site. I ve always wanted to try my hand at baking and every time i tried, it ended in a disaster. I followed your 5 minute cake instruction to the T and HURRAY…. I DID IT ! THANKS a million times. I made it for the New year. I have a few doubts. Kindly help me. 1) the egg smell was a little dominant . 2) It seems to start becoming soggy after 5 to 6 hrs. Taste was so good. Thanks once again.
    Love
    Sowmya

    • Hi Sowmya,

Thanks for your sweet comment. I’m so glad that the cake came out well for you.

About the eggy smell, try to use eggs with light colored yolks for baking. If the yolks are dark yellow/orange, there will be too much of eggy smell. If you used eggs with light colored yolks & still the eggy smell is there, increase the qty of vanilla essence to 1 tsp.

About the cake becoming soggy…I’m not very sure. However when you store a cake make sure that it is completely cooled before storing it. Also store the cake in an airtight container & the size of the container is such that it fits the cake perfectly, no excess space.

Hope this helps….please do continue to try the recipes from here. I’m sorry for the delayed response, I’m on vacation presently.

      Cheers
      Maria

      • Dearest Maria,

  13. Hi Maria,
X’mas time is coming near …wanted to try out some cake and simply googled and came to visit your site..Amazing…all recepies are simple and delicious.i tried 5 min cake that too without a handmixer and an oven .(I baked in pressure cooker ) it came out well.
I got the way of making cake in pressure cooker from site..
For those who dont have a pressure cooker you can also use this method

Baking Tin should be made of Aluminium
Heat the presure cooker on high heat for 2 minutes.
Caution: If baking tin comes into direct contact of the base of cooker, it can harm ( overbake ) the cake.
Remedy: Use cooker container which has big holes in it. You can put the baking tin on that container and then put it inside the presure coker. Even if you do not have the cooker container cake can be made, but there is a big chance of getting its lower part overbaked

Do not put water inside the pressure cooker)
Close the cooker lid and do not put the whistle on the lid.Lower the flame from high to low after 2 minutes.
Let it cook for 40 minutes, then switch off the heat. Do not open the lid immediately.

    Cooked Cake Testing
After 10 minutes open the lid to check whether the cake is done. Put a skewer inside the cake. (Skewer – a long thin pointed piece of metal or wood, used to test whether something is completely cooked )
If the mixture will not stick on it, means that cake is done.
    Serve.

I checked the baking in betweeen to test whether its coming up..In 40 min itself it the cake got ready…
    Thanks a lot Maria…

    • Dear Anitha,

Thank you so much for such a lovely comment and also for sharing the process of baking in a pressure cooker. I’m sure it will help many readers of MM.

I appreciate very much your effort for taking time to explain it here, it means a lot tome :). Next time, I get a mail/comment asking about pressure cooker baking I’ll share this with them :)

Wish you and your family a Merry Christmas & a Wonderful New Year!

      Cheers
      Maria

  14. Maria,

Can I make this in pressure cooker? if yes how long I have to keep it in pressure cooker? (need to put the weight or not)

    Rekha

  15. Dear Maria,

I love your recipes…I am a novice at baking and the first cake I baked for my daughters first birthday was from your site…This is a very easy recipe .
    Thanks..keep posting!

  16. Thanks for the reply!!! The cake I baked is from some recipe I got from a friend… Just wanted to know whether blending with a wire whisk would be sufficient, since I dont have a cake mixer.

  17. Hi!!I have been checking ur blog for over a year now- have tried the chicken curries u have posted.I have just tried baking once.. The cake was ok, but the taste of vanilla essence was little too much….
I have a 7inch round pan. Will I be able to make a cake using the measurements mentioned in this recipe.. Also just wanted to know one cup mentioned here is how much ml??

    • Hi PRIYA,

Thanks for trying out the recipe. From the comment I couldnt make out which cake you were referring to about the vanilla taste. However you can adjust the qty of essence to suit your taste.

I think 7 inch round pan is a bit small for the above mentioned qty. Try baking half the qty in 7 inch pan, it should be ok. The cup I used is 237 ml.

      Happy baking :)

      Cheers
      Maria

  18. hi maria..

    Sheaba

    • Hi Sheaba,

Great to know that the cake came out well for you :)

Timing can be different for diff ovens even if we use same temp and also if you have used a small size cake tin, the baking time will be more.

      Cheers
      Maria

  20. Hi Maria,

  21. Hi maria,

    Thanks again..

    Anila

  22. Hi, I have been regularly receiving new recipes from you. Although I have not been able to prepare all of them due to tight schedules as my children’s school have begun & I am left with very little time to try out new things. But this weekend, I sacrificed my afternoon short nap & tried out your 5 minutes cake. I tell you, it came out so well that my husband(who doesnt show any interest in cakes prepared by me as it does not taste like the readymade ones) , he too appreciated this cake. I dont have to mention about my children’s craziness for this cake. My elder son literally cried when I told him that the cake was over the next day & he insisted that I prepare the same cake as soon as possible. I am thankful to you for this recipe.
I would also like to know the different ways of Icing on the cake.

  23. Hey Maria….
I’m so happy to tell u that I tried out this wonderful recipie of urs (with exactly the same measurements) and it turned out to be surprisingly wonderful….The cake was extremely soft…(25% credit to my baking powder too….cos a friend of mine had brought it during an official trip outside India)

I am really fond of cooking and baking… and got the link to this blog from a friend last week …. I shud tell u that the way u present things is really impressive…hmmm…..its like…. from ur description itself I had an urge to try this out….

    Gr8 job Maria…
Waiting for more of ur surprises….
Meanwhile i’ll try out the different recipies listed out here n keep u posted…

    Love,
    Ann

    • Hi Ann

      • you know what maria….
‘m spending all my liesure times in MariasMenu…n giving maximum publicity to the site by informing about it to all my lady colleagues ;-)

  24. hi maria,
i tried this thing, but it dint come out well… it took around 50 min to finish baking, also the batter was quite watery after i added the milk and butter… is 1 cup milk reqd? I used prestige measuring cup and measures were exact… anyways the cake was tasty, though the baking was not very pleasant :)… please let me know if that much is reqd..

    • Hi Fehmida

Thanks for trying this recipe. I’ve baked this quite a few times and I’ve used the same measurement always. So am not sure about reducing the qty of milk.

There can be two reasons why it takes 50 minutes to bake:

The oven temp can vary depending on different ovens. If its taking you too long to bake, you can try this. Preheat the oven at 200 degree for 10 minutes before baking. Also bake the cake at 200 degree for first 10 minutes and then reduce the temp to 180 degree and bake for another 15- 20 mins or till the cake is done.

Also if the baking tin is small, that will also result in long baking time. I used a 9 inch round cake tin to bake this.

      Hope this helps.

      Happy baking :)

      Cheers
      Maria

  25. hi maria,
