Parippu Chaaru (Curry)

This parippu (dal) curry is a typical Kerala dish. It's one of the main dishes of Onasadhya as well. We call it “parippu chaaru” at home. If there is parippu chaaru, ghee and pappad, it's almost like a mini sadya for me. I just love the smell of ghee drizzled over parippu, it increases my appetite beyond limits. Usually I don't eat much rice, but with this I wouldn't even mind a 2nd or 3rd helping :) Actually back home if parippu chaaru is made for lunch, extra rice will be made, since everybody tends to have more servings of rice with this. (see am not the only guilty person here ;) )

You can see other dal recipes here. For complete list of Onam recipes, check out this page.

Here is the recipe…

Grind together coconut, jeera, green chilli and turmeric powder with 1 -2 tbsp water to a smooth paste…

Step 1- Parippu Curry
  • Save

Roast the moong dal in a pressure cooker for 4-5 mins on low flame, till you get the roasted smell. Add 3 cups water to the roasted dal. Mix well. Cover the cooker and pressure cook for 8-10 whistles on full flame. Switch off the gas and let the pressure drops naturally. Mash the cooked dal using a wooden spoon or you can just run it in food processor or blender for a few seconds…

Step 2 - Parippu Curry
  • Save

Add ground paste, salt and 1/2 – 1 cup water to the mashed dal. Mix well. Let it cook on low flame for 5-7 mins. Remove from heat…

Heat oil/ghee in another pan and splutter mustard seeds. Add small onion, curry leaves and red chilli. Fry till small onion becomes golden brown. Pour over cooked dal…

Notes

You can also cook the dal using pressure cooker. Cook on high flame for 5-6 whistles. keep it closed for 10-15 mins and open the cooker.
I recommend using ghee for this recipe.

    • Hi Thansi,

      Thank you!

Though I’m using coconut in my recipes, you can always customise it to suit your requirements. You can avoid coconut and follow the rest of the recipe.

Since we prefer coconut based curries and dishes, I tend to use it frequently. However I’ll try to post other recipes as well :)

      Cheers

  6. Hi Maria,

Thank you for posting these amazing recipes. I am going to try your version of parippu charu tonight. I have been trying your recipes for sometime and they recreate the perfect taste I associate with home.

Just a small question – by small onions, you mean shallots, right?

A request and a recommendation – Could you keep your site optimized for smartphone views? I am always referring back to recipes when I’m cooking using my Galaxy S3 but due to the multiple columns, the page doesn’t always display properly. I know I am asking too much when you’re already taking the trouble posting all these wonderful recipes :)

Thanks again and hoping to make a perfect curry tonight,

    Meera

    • Hi Meera,

You are welcome :) Great to know that the recipes here reminds you of home food, thank you!

      Small onion is shallot.

About your request and recommendation –

The site is already optimized for smart phone use, with the exception of the recipes index, as we have to display all the recipes in various formats. You can always use the search box at the top of the page to get to the recipe you want quickly. Or if you scroll down on the home page, select one of the recipe sections, you will be shown all recipes in that section. If the problem you face is when you hold the phone vertically, we suggest using horizontally, as this will display more in the browser. You can see how its supposed to look at: http://responsive.is/mariasmenu.com

      Hope this helps..

Hope your curry turned out great!

      Cheers

      • Thank you for getting back to me. I served it to some northie friends who are usually dal maniacs, and they loved it. Also i tried you nadan mutton curry. It was finger licking, plate licking and even kadai-licking tasty. Did not waste even a drop of it. I did not have to wash the kadai at the end. ;).

  13. Hey…I just remembered something else…I was not sure how long to roast the dal for coz its not mentioned in the recipe and I ended up burning it abit. It will be good if you could add this info to the recipe (just a suggestion).

  14. Hi Maria…I tried your Parippu curry last night and loved it. My dad said that he could eat it plain.

I had to add more water to my curry as it was getting thicker. The final product was really thick. My guess is that I can add more hot water to loosen it. Or is there any other method to loosen it?

    Love

But as of now I have your recipe for “nadan beef curry” and its on the stove cooking.(.not the paper the beef curry..:-). So you can guess my menu for lunch apparently seems to be parippu curry, beef olethiyedhe, pappadam, beetroot thoran and Rice. How does that sound?!

Thank you so much for the painstaking work.

Could you add some more nadan recipes like sambar, thorans and stuff like that. Especially CHICKEN BIRIYANI , i tried making it many different ways but unfortunately it never works well. and sadly thats my husband’s one of the favourites.

I will try to post more nadan recipes. I’ve posted a mutton biriyani recipe here. Originally its a chicken biriyani recipe, I happened to make it with mutton and posted it. Please try out that recipe. You can find it here:

      https://mariasmenu.wpcomstaging.com/mutton/mutton-biriyani

Just replace mutton with chicken in the above recipe, rest everything is same. If you’ve any doubts, please write to me.
